Below are many of the classic feelings associated with performance anxiety, stage fright, shyness, social phobia and fear of public speaking. How many of them do you experience in anticipation of having to perform on stage, speak publicly, conduct a presentation, give a speech, head a meeting, or in some way communicate and express yourself openly to others? How severe would you rate each one? (1 to 10) 10 being the most severe?

Answer these questions yes or no.

Does the thought of expressing yourself publicly fill you with dread?
Do you use avoidance as a method of coping with your fear?
Do you experience meltdown in anticipation of performing or expressing in front of others?
Does the thought of making mistakes terrify you?
Are you obsessed with the fear of being humiliated?
Do social invitations bring you dread even anxiety?
In social situations are you anxious, feel isolated and long to get home?
Do you become anxious about the possibility of being the center of attention?
Do you dislike or even become fearful participating in group discussions?
Do you fear your mind will go blank and you'll forget everything?
Do you find yourself focused on negative results?
When you must give a performance or presentation do you begin to get the feeling you're trapped and can't escape?
Are you a perfectionist?
Are you very self-critical?
Do you fear losing control?
Do you avoid starting conversation out of fear of saying something awkward?
Does your heart race when you know people are looking at you?
Do you pass up career opportunities, or sabotage yourself, then feel angry at yourself afterwords?

This portion of the Self-Test will help you become aware of how your performance anxiety is negatively affecting your career and quality of life.

Review your answers again - How can you possibly perform or present at your potential when you're distracted by any of these feelings and behaviors?
